For the utmost in relaibility, Ocean Design specializes in the manufacture of fluid filled, pressure balanced connectors both electrical and fiber optic.  Two basic designs, the Nautilus and the OD blue are desribed on the linked page.  These connectors can be mated by hand or manipulator at any depth.
